But beyond Siem Reap and the crowds, is a small but stunning monument: Preah Ko. It&#8217;s the oldest surviving temple in the region, and pre-dates its better known neighbors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I visited Cambodia in early October, near the end of the monsoon season when visitor numbers are vastly lower than in the dry months of November to April. Yet even in low season, tour buses filled the parking lots and travelers with selfie sticks jostled for photos.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was actually happy to see visitors during rainy season; developing countries like Cambodia benefit greatly from tourism that extends beyond the peak months. So I ventured east into the countryside with a guide and driver. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: I arranged a guide through my hotel, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/angkor.shintamani.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shinta Mani<\/a><\/span>. There are also organized tours of these temples, which are further from Siem Reap. Children swam in rivers that had swelled to the tops of their banks;<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\">I was ready to join them. The downside of visiting at this time of year was it was hot. Very hot.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Still, I couldn&#8217;t stop smiling. I was in Southeast Asia for the first time in 25 years \u2014 a result of my decision to make travel a bigger part of my life in my 50s and beyond. (The same Angkor Pass provides admittance to all the Roluos Group temples). <\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\">We pulled off the narrow road and into a small parking lot.\u00a0The first thing I noticed was the absence of tour buses.\u00a0Where was everybody?\u00a0I saw one Cambodian family leaving as we arrived. All of the Angkor sites are always free to Cambodians &#8211; what a fantastic policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">I grabbed my hat and camera and we walked toward the complex. A cavalcade of dragonflies appeared, swooping in circles, like skaters practicing figure eights. Preah Ko is a fraction of the size of Angkor Wat, but it is absolutely stunning. Mr. Barung led me around the towers and told stories of the Khmer Empire and the ancient city this had once been a part of. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Roluos Group dates to the 9th century. This area was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the city of Hariharalaya, the capital of the north Khmer Empire, with Preah Ko the oldest surviving monument of the city.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The capital was later moved to Angkor Thom, which I had visited the previous day. They are represented at Preah Ko in several ways, such as in the intricate carvings of the lintels above the doors. I wandered among the towers, admiring the carvings and the beautiful Khmer text carved into the stone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">During the hundreds of years of the Khmer Empire, the dominant religion changed several times, back and forth between Hindu and Buddhism. In the absence of other tourists, I could hear the wind in the trees and \u00a0imagine the ancient world that had once flourished where I stood. The wind seemed to carry whispers of the gods who had been worshipped here centuries ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visiting Preah Ko was an especially memorable experience of my Cambodia trip.
