The largest dunes in North America were millions of years in the making, but the newest park to receive &#8220;national park&#8221; status, in 2003.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\">The dune fields encompass more than\u00a030 square miles beneath\u00a0the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.\u00a0As the lakes that covered portions of this valley dried up, sand was left behind and funneled by winds into a natural pocket between the mountains. So it can still be chilly for camping. Average July temperatures are 80 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night. First, do you want to camp? Camping is open April through October, but can be very cold at either end of the camping season, with summer the most pleasant camping weather, thanks to temps that tend to dip down in the evening.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The busiest camping season is July and August, and late May and June bring lots of people who want to swim in Medano Creek.\u00a0So if you have flexibility, don&#8217;t mind cooler temps and want to avoid crowds, I think the best time to visit Great Sand Dunes is late spring or early fall.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We visited in mid-April and had very pleasant weather, with the added benefit of lighter crowds and lots of available accommodation. Temperatures for hiking were also ideal. Summer air can be pleasant with an elevation of 8700 feet here. But the sand does get very hot so you will only be able to climb the dunes early or late in the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dunes are surrounded by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meadows<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forested hills, which offer a great variety of hiking, beyond the sand. Hiking would be very hot in July and August, so early morning hikes would be preferable if you visit in summer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spring, we enjoyed hiking in the nearby forest which had a wonderful view of the dunes and mountains. There were also some pretty waterfalls to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\">If seeing Colorado wildflowers is a priority, the best time to visit is June or July.\u00a0\u00a0The Sand Creek Lakes hike is supposed to be beautiful at that time. We brought plastic sleds but learned that the surface is usually too dry for &#8220;snow sleds&#8221;;\u00a0 if you want to try sand boarding or sledding, you will need to rent special equipment with the right kind of surface and a special wax finish. However, it has closed to visitors in 2025. They have posted the following message:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><em>&#8220;While plans are still being developed, the Nature Conservancy\u2019s vision for the future of the Zapata Ranch will likely include Tribal involvement and the use of the Preserve as a place for cultural connection, learning and resource protection alongside meaningful engagement with Tribal Nations, Indigenous Peoples, and the San Luis Valley\u2019s historic Latino and local diverse communities. <\/em><\/p><p><em>This change comes after a significant review by The Nature Conservancy of their Colorado Preserves to determine the best role for each property to achieve their strategic plan and have maximum impact to their mission. It was very quiet in April when we visited, just us and a herd of 2,000 American Plains bison which roam the property\u2019s 50,000-acre pasture. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The charming ranch is set amongst a grove of cottonwoods, and t<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">he original homestead was built in the 1800s. The 17 guest rooms reflect that heritage offering the rustic charm of an old log cabin \u2014 a cabin that has been thoughtfully appointed with charming decor, plush beds and beautiful linens. The common areas are welcoming and comfortable, with a gorgeous view out every window.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summer, you can book stays with or without ranch activities and horseback riding \u2014 the latter requires a minimum three-nights. Prices are inclusive of breakfast and dinner, and the food is delicious. You could easily and happily fill several days here, and if you are looking for an authentic western ranch experience with fantastic food, this is it. I had not heard of them before our visit but this organization is doing amazing conservation work.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It&#8217;s an environmental non-profit that was founded in the U.S. in 1951, it has grown to operate in 79 countries, with more than a million member supporters. They are actively addressing climate change, land conservation, and food and water sustainability, as well as sustainable growth of cities. More than 400 scientists are on staff and have protected more than 125 million acres of land to date.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8609b63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8609b63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bison originally numbered in the tens of millions through the vast plains of the western U.S., but were almost wiped out by 1900. Today bison numbers have grown close to half a million, much of that is livestock, but there are also conservation herds, such as at Zapata Ranch, near the Great Sand Dunes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reintroduction of bison enables land which had been overgrazed by cattle, to rebound, when properly managed. Beyond exploring the sand dunes and horseback riding, there is hiking, fly fishing and rafting, all of my favorite Colorado experiences in one beautiful place. To get the most of the all of these experience, the best time to visit Great Sand Dunes and Medano Ranch is the summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Although there was less going on in April, our spring visit was very enjoyable. Our children were quite young when we stayed and Medano is excellent at accommodating families.\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ranch has delicious gourmet meals, including the chance to try bison, if you wish. Otherwise, the meat and produce served is locally sourced, to the extent possible. Writing this article has reminded me what a special gem it is.\u00a0<\/p><p>I would love to return to the sand dunes in fall, when the days are warm and the nights are cool. Then again, it would be fun to visit in late May, to swim in Medano creek. The summer would be great fun as well, with so many activities.<\/p><p>In other words, there&#8217;s not a single best time to visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
